Workshop "The rights of migrant children: law and practices"
«Every child in Europe and across the world should enjoy the same rights and be able to live free of discrimination, recrimination or intimidation of any kind», as stated by the European Commission in the framework of the EU strategy on the rights of the child (2021).
However migrant children are very often exposed to risks of abuse, violence and exploitation. They are in a state of particular vulnerability, because of their age, the migration experience and, sometimes, their separation from parents.
Therefore, they require specific and appropriate protection in the legislation and in practice. Starting from the arrival on the territory to the reception, the integration and the transition to adulthood, the workshop aims to analyse migrant children’s rights and the challenges that Italy and the whole European Union are facing in their protection. A particular attention will be paid to the effective access to basic services, to the guardianship of unaccompanied minors, to the age assessment, to the child poverty and to the impact of Covid-19. All the topics will be analysed in the framework of the EU strategy on the rights of the child and of the Child Guarantee.
