Summer school “Family life and rights of migrant children in the European Union” – June/July 2021
The online summer school “Family life and rights of migrant children in the European Union” aimed to provide:
- an advanced insight on the international and EU law on immigration and asylum, with a particular reference to international covenants and regional treaties (such as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the UN Refugee Convention, the European Convention on Human Rights), to the EU directive 2003/86/EC on the right to family and to the implementation of the right to family life in the Common European Asylum System;
- a practical and immediately applicable knowledge, using a multidisciplinary perspective, on the right to private and family life of migrant children, offering also an overview of the relevant case law through case study analysis and a strategic litigation session;
- an overview of challenges that EU and Member States are facing in protecting children's rights, such as the impact of Covid-19, climate change, human trafficking and smuggling, birth registration and prevention of statelessness, transition to the adulthood for unaccompanied minors, etc.
The most relevant issues arising from the new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, from the EU Strategy on the Rights of the Child and from the legislations of the EU Member States were discussed during the lectures, providing participants with all the relevant teaching materials (regulations, case-law, reports, etc.).
The Course was based on a participatory methodology, including several case studies and Q&A sessions planned to stimulate the interaction between trainers and trainees and to promote the creation of a network among all the participants. The topics were analysed adopting an interdisciplinary approach, involving trainers from different disciplines and backgrounds. Trainers were academics and experts from FRA, European Commission, ICJ, UNHCR, Save the Children, ASGI, ECRE, etc.
